COSTUME DESIGNS
My love of jewelry

THINK...............
A first-time visit to Olivia Trigoso boutique , spurred me to think about my former life, in which I covered....fine jewelry. And almost only fine jewelry, in fact, for another magazine. 'Twas a beautiful experience, and not only because I spent most of my day playing with the most opulent, coveted baubles in the world. Anyway, I've been reminiscing about my favorite jewelry designers, and since a few of you have written to me about gemmy matters, here's a brief tour of my dreamiest diamante haunts.

Start, always, at Doyle & Doyle, a precious store on Manhattan's Lower East Side. You might - just might! - see my friend Mike, who works there. Anyway, they have the best prices in town for higher-end antiques; a fantastic and unexpected place to buy engagement rings.

Fred Leighton. Duh. "Mr. Leighton" (his real name is Murray Mondschien) has one of the deepest, widest, most breathtaking collections in the world. Everything from micromosaics parures to 18th-century cameos to Egyptian revival chains can be yours - for a price. A big, big price.

Socialites are Taffin loyalists, where the wildly talented James de Givenchy (yes, nephew of Hubert) dreams up wild, wacky whatevers meant to be worn to the most opulent fetes in town.

The ground floors of Bergdorf Goodman and Barneys New York because, quite simply, it's all there.

For punky, seventies-inspired rock and roll baubles (yes, they exist), check out Bess on Lafayette and Houston. Designer Doug Abraham named it after his groovy wife.

If you love one of a kind curiosities, you can't miss De Vera. Plenty of wonderfully strange jewelry is mixed in with other antiques and objets d'art.

Watches and artsy baubles: Aaron Faber. I swoon over his watches and Tom Munsteiner rings.

For the stuff I really wear, I go to Canal Street. I love huge rapper-style pendants, like peace signs and Mercedes emblems. They cost $20 maximum and always get a response (though not necessarily a good one!).

What baubles will your guy buy you ?

Tell him about,
